Project Overview

RRP was contracted to provide professional engineering and management services for Cameron County. Project includes the Bridge Layout and an Environmental Assessment for the relocation of the Union Pacific Railroad Main Line through Brownsville and into Mexico with a relocated International Railroad Bridge crossing of the Rio Grande for the Brownsville and Matamoros Bridge Company (B&M). The proposed improvements will tie to a relocation of rail facilities out of Matamoros on the Mexican side of the River to connect to rail operations of the Transportacion Ferroviaria Mexicana. RRP coordinated project development and identified potential funding for the construction phase with the U.S. State Department, TxDOT and the Federal Highway Administration. RRP prepared preliminary bridge layouts for the Rio Grande River crossing based on UPRR and AREMA Manual of Railway Engineering Design and Detailing Criteria. Layouts for the Rio Grande Crossing included hydraulic data, results of potential scour analysis as well as structure type, spans, and foundation type and freeboard above calculated highwater elevation(s). Preliminary layouts for alternatives for the Rio Grande Bridge relative to the bridge width, type of structure and proposed materials, steel versus concrete superstructure spans were also developed. RRP assisted with final design of bridge substructure details for the structure over the Rio Grande and associated superstructure details for the spans over US 281 and the approach spans south of the main river spans in accordance with UPRR criteria and the latest edition of the AREMA Manual of Railway Engineering.
